First Glimpse of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's All of a Sudden Featuring Virginie Efira
Following up on Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and his Oscar-winning Drive My Car, Ryusuke Hamaguchi has secretly shot his upcoming film, Evil Does Not Exist. More details are emerging about his next feature, All of a Sudden. This French production, featuring Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, has secured the top position in our list of the 100 most anticipated films of 2026, and the first image has now been revealed.
As sales commence at Berlinale’s European Film Market, Variety has unveiled the first image from this French-language film, which is inspired by real letters found in Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono’s book, “You and I – The Illness Suddenly Get Worse.” The film is expected to make its debut at Cannes and reportedly has a runtime of about three hours, accompanied by a score from Canadian-French composer Samuel Andreyev.
The synopsis reads: “All of a Sudden features Virginie Efira as Marie-Lou Fontaine, a nursing home director in the suburbs of Paris, who challenges conventions by implementing the ‘Humanitude’ method, despite her team's objections. Her meeting with Mari Morisaki (Tao Okamoto), a terminally ill Japanese playwright, changes her life. Together, they transform the facility into a beacon of resilience and compassion against the system’s constraints. Efira learned Japanese for this role.”
