The 12 Greatest Movie Plot Twists of All Time, Ranked from Least to Most Impressive

Here are the top movie plot twists ever, ranked from least to most impressive.

As you’ll notice, we tend to favor twists that alter the course of a film rather than those that simply conclude it.

However, we appreciate plot twists of all types.

      But First

There are many surprises that aren't actually twists. A true twist fundamentally changes our understanding of the story, whereas a reveal is just a surprise.

We enjoy surprises — for instance, Silence of the Lambs is packed with them, but these surprises don’t lead us to reconsider everything we’ve seen. Similarly, The Crying Game has a well-known reveal, but it doesn’t significantly alter the narrative. Citizen Kane also features a notable surprise ending, but it doesn't transform the film; it feels more like a flourish.

With that in mind, here are the 12 Best Movie Plot Twists, Ranked. Be aware that many spoilers follow. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, you can read only the “The Plot” section of each entry and skip the rest. We urge you to experience these films without prior knowledge of their twists.

These twists are ranked from least to most impressive.

      Number 12: Primal Fear

      Paramount

The Plot: Ambitious defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) advocates for Aaron Stampler (Ed Norton), a passive altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. Vail grows to believe his client suffers from dissociative personality disorder due to years of abuse, including from the archbishop, which led to the emergence of a violent persona named Roy.

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The film concludes with Aaron revealing to his lawyer that he fabricated his dissociative disorder and is actually more like the aggressive Roy than the meek Aaron.

Why It’s Good: Ed Norton delivers an exceptional performance, making the twist work even if it seems implausible on paper. This twist ranks lowest on our list because we prefer twists that arrive early enough for their effects to resonate. While we enjoy twist endings, we favor mid-movie twists even more.

      Number 11: Frozen

The Plot: Irritated by her sister Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) wanting to marry Prince Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana), a man she just met, Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) inadvertently releases her hidden ice powers that she has concealed since childhood.

The Plot Twist: Late in the story, it becomes clear that Hans doesn’t genuinely care for Anna; he’s actually cold-hearted. Thus, the anticipated kiss that seems destined to conclude the story doesn’t occur.

Why It Works: There’s nothing better than a well-executed twist in a children's movie, especially one that teaches children to be cautious of strangers. Frozen skillfully sets up its major twist with clever misdirection — all wrapped in an uplifting musical number — as Hans and Anna seem to bond (or do they?) during their duet, “Love is an Open Door.”

      Number 10: Chinatown

The Plot: Set in the 1930s, this neo-noir, which won an Oscar for Best Screenplay by Robert Towne, follows private detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), who is drawn into an intricate scheme involving the Los Angeles water supply and the wealthy Noah Cross (John Huston) by Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway).

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): During a confrontation with Gittes, the tragic Evelyn reveals that Cross, her father, raped her when she was 15, resulting in the birth of Katherine, whom she chillingly refers to as “my sister and my daughter.”

Why It’s Good: This shocking revelation underscores the villainy of Cross, not only victimizing the land but also his own daughter, and heightens the stakes of what could have been a mundane narrative about water rights. Best of all, it occurs early in the film, casting a darker tone over everything that precedes it and igniting our anger towards the antagonist.

      Number 9: Fight Club

The Plot: An unnamed protagonist (Edward Norton), in search of a more fulfilling life, establishes a fight club with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charismatic man he encounters during his aimless business trips. Their antics evolve into an anti-consumerist uprising.

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The Norton character has been Tyler Durden all along! He’s like a cooler imaginary companion.

Why It’s Good: If you didn’t see that coming (I certainly didn’t when I watched Fight Club in theaters in 1999), it was a major revelation. Yes, it occurs somewhat late in the film, but it still lands powerfully. Once you recognize it, discussing the surprise becomes the first rule of Fight Club.

Number 8: The Wizard of Oz
