The 12 Greatest Movie Plot Twists Ever, Ranked From Least to Most Impressive
Here are the greatest movie plot twists ever, listed from the least to the most impactful.
As you'll notice, our preference tends to lean towards twists that transform a film rather than those that conclude it.
Nevertheless, we appreciate plot twists of all varieties.
But First

There are many surprising moments that don’t qualify as twists. A twist fundamentally alters our understanding of the narrative, while a reveal is merely a surprise.
We enjoy surprises — for example, Silence of the Lambs is packed with them, but these moments don’t compel us to reevaluate what has occurred up to that point. The Crying Game also features a notable reveal, yet it doesn't significantly alter the story. Citizen Kane is famous for its surprising conclusion, but it doesn’t substantially change the film; it feels more like an embellishment.
With that in mind, here are the 12 Best Movie Plot Twists, Ranked. Beware of spoilers ahead. If you wish to avoid spoilers, just focus on the “The Plot” section of each entry and skip the remainder. We’d much rather you experience these films firsthand than spoil them here.
These are organized from the least to the most impressive.
Number 12: Primal Fear
Paramount
The Plot: Ambitious defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) works to represent the gentle Aaron Stampler (Ed Norton), an altar boy accused of killing a Catholic archbishop. Vail suspects that Stampler suffers from dissociative personality disorder due to years of abuse, including that inflicted by the archbishop, which caused him to adopt the violent persona of Roy.
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The film concludes with Aaron confessing to Vail that he has fabricated his dissociative disorder and actually resembles the violent Roy more than the mild Aaron.
Why It’s Good: Ed Norton executes this twist convincingly, even if it appears absurd on paper. This twist ranks lowest on our list because we favor twists that occur earlier in the film, allowing audiences to feel their impact. While we appreciate an ending twist, we are even more fond of twists that happen early or in the middle of the film.
Number 11: Frozen
The Plot: When her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) expresses a desire to marry the recently met Prince Hans (Santino Fontana), Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) inadvertently reveals her long-concealed ice powers after becoming frustrated.
The Plot Twist: Later in the story, it becomes clear that Hans does not genuinely love Anna; he is actually cold-hearted. Thus, the anticipated fairy tale ending kiss does not take place.
Why It Works: We love a well-executed twist in a children's film — particularly one that teaches children to be cautious of strangers. Frozen skillfully misdirects the audience, culminating in a stunning twist during a soaring musical number, as Hans and Anna seem to bond during their duet “Love is an Open Door” — but do they really?
Number 10: Chinatown
Paramount – Credit: C/O
The Plot: Set in the 1930s, this neo-noir film follows private detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), who is drawn into a complicated investigation involving Los Angeles's water supply and the affluent Noah Cross, thanks to Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway).
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): During a confrontation with Gittes, the tragic Evelyn reveals that her father, Cross, raped her when she was 15, resulting in the birth of Katherine, whom she calls “my sister and my daughter.”
Why It’s Good: This shocking revelation underscores the horrors of Cross, who abuses not only the land but his own daughter, raising the stakes of a story that might otherwise seem mundane. Best of all, it occurs early enough in the film to resonate throughout, casting a dark shadow over previous events and inciting our rage toward the villain.
Number 9: Fight Club
20th Century Fox – Credit: C/O
The Plot: An unnamed protagonist (Edward Norton), in search of a more meaningful existence, establishes a fight club with the charismatic Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) after meeting him on a soulless business trip. They embark on a path of chaos that transforms into an anti-consumerist revolution.
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The character played by Norton has been Tyler Durden all along! He serves as a cooler imaginary companion.
Why It’s Good: If you didn’t foresee this twist (and I certainly didn’t when I watched Fight Club in a theater in 1999), it was a complete shock. While it occurs a bit later in the film, it lands effectively. Once realized, the first rule of Fight Club becomes not to talk about that surprise.
Number 8: The Wizard of Oz
MGM – Credit: C/O
The Plot: After a tornado transports Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto
