The Stranger Trailer: François Ozon's Highly Regarded Adaptation of Albert Camus is Set to Release in April
Following the tradition established by Luchino Visconti, François Ozon has released a fresh adaptation of Albert Camus's classic novel The Stranger. This film, one of his most praised works, features a cast that includes Benjamin Voisin, Rebecca Marder, Pierre Lottin, Denis Lavant, and Swann Arlaud. With its New York premiere set for this week at Film at Lincoln Center’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema and a theatrical release scheduled for April 3, Music Box Films has released a new trailer.
The synopsis reads: “Meursault (Benjamin Voisin) is a clerk in an office in Algiers during the era of French colonial rule. A reserved individual who prefers solitude, Meursault's life is disrupted by the unexpected death of his mother. At her funeral, he is judged harshly by others for not expressing grief. His reputation for emotional detachment permeates his life, affecting his hesitant relationship with Marie (Rebecca Marder) and his lack of ambition in his career. As Meursault becomes embroiled in escalating tensions with his neighbors, the situation escalates to a climax when he kills an Arab man on the beach. Although a Frenchman might justify shooting an Arab in Algeria, Meursault's lack of excuses or regret profoundly disturbs the colonial society. Shot in exquisite, evocative black-and-white, François Ozon’s interpretation of Camus’s timeless novel about existential angst is a significant adaptation, remaining true to the original text while exploring new insights in its nuances.”
Zhuo-Ning Su stated in his review from Venice, “The most important aspect that Ozon’s film captures is the moral and philosophical complexities that shape its main character. While technically remarkable, Visconti’s adaptation, elevated by Marcello Mastroianni’s passionate and empathetic performance, was fundamentally flawed in its interpretation of the source material. Meursault is not intended to be sympathetic or emotionally charged; each time Mastroianni attempts to evoke your emotions with his sincere, tearful expressions, it undermines Camus's cold and subtly shocking perspective on the world.”
