Exclusive Interview – Kenn Scott discusses Raphael and the legacy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This weekend’s Toronto Comicon is honoring the Heroes in a Half-Shell by welcoming stars from the 90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, including Brian Tochi, Kenn Scott, Ernie Reyes Jr., and François Chau, who portrayed Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Shredder, respectively.
Scott played Raphael, the temperamental turtle, in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, performing many fight scenes in the cumbersome suit designed by the Jim Henson Company. The sequel is currently commemorating its 35th anniversary, with some theater chains showcasing its 4K remaster for special anniversary viewings.
Scott acknowledges the lasting impact of the franchise and understands what the characters signify for countless fans worldwide. “I’ve been involved in this for many years, met numerous fans, and I’ve realized not only the responsibility I have but also the significance this holds for a generation and more of followers,” Scott explained. “Ninja Turtles is more than just a movie; it’s not merely something that came and went. It has actually formed a mythology for an entire generation of children, many of whom are now between 35 and 50 years old, and they are sharing it with their own kids. Even their parents, now grandparents, are involved because they purchased all the toys and comics when their children were younger.
I’ve witnessed three generations connect with Ninja Turtles, and it has become deeply meaningful for them. People have shared stories of family bonding, brothers uniting, and families overcoming tough times. I recognize the responsibility we now bear regarding what this represents to people.”
Scott has also authored a book detailing his experiences filming Ninja Turtles and engaging with the fandom, titled Teenage Ninja to Mutant Turtle: Becoming The Real Raphael, which is currently available. You can catch our full interview on the Flickering Myth YouTube channel below…
