Orlando von Einsiedel, the Oscar-winning director of The Cycle of Love, attended a Nobel Prize event in Sweden in 2017 when two young adults approached him holding a book. “This is our parents’ story,” they informed Einsiedel. “We’re familiar with your work. Would you be interested in making a film about it?”

The director, who won an Academy Award that same year for the short documentary “The White Helmets,” accepted the book but didn’t read it right away.

“Based on my experience, when someone approaches you unexpectedly at an event, it usually doesn’t turn out to be the story you’re hoping for,” Einsiedel shared. “But once I started reading, I realized I’d been mistaken.”

The book, titled The Amazing Story of the Man Who Cycled From India to Sweden for Love, narrates the tale of PK Mahanandia, a poor street artist from Delhi, and Anne-Charlotte von Schedvin (Lotta), a Swedish traveler. For just 10 rupees in 1975, PK drew a portrait of Lotta. That brief 10-minute encounter proved to be pivotal, leading to their romance.

Einsiedel found the story captivating, filled with a “rich tapestry of universal themes.” As a result, in 2023, he began production on The Cycle of Love, a 98-minute documentary that recounts PK and Lotta’s improbable love story and PK’s 6,000-mile journey through Iran and Afghanistan in 1977 to reunite with Lotta two years after they first met.

The inspiring documentary uses old letters, photographs, and contemporary interviews with PK and Lotta, as well as reenactments featuring actors, to portray the epic true story of a man willing to risk everything for love.

Einsiedel recently screened The Cycle of Love at the 23rd edition of the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX), following its premiere at Telluride.

We spoke with Einsiedel about working with actors, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ role as an executive producer, and why he felt CPH:DOX was the perfect venue for The Cycle of Love.

Orlando von Einsiedel on Making The Cycle of Love

MovieMaker: Your previous documentaries address serious issues, like the rescue efforts of the Syrian Civil Defence in Aleppo (“The White Helmets”) and the fight to protect Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Virunga). The Cycle of Love is more uplifting. How was the transition to a story like this?

Orlando von Einsiedel: The short answer is I might be getting older and more sentimental. There are certainly many vital and urgent stories in the world that deserve attention on screen. However, I’ve been increasingly eager to create a film that is unabashedly positive, promoting joy and human connection — sentiments that are often underappreciated but are crucial for all of us.

MovieMaker: Did you have any reservations about creating this documentary given the lack of old footage from PK’s 6,000-mile journey?

Orlando von Einsiedel: Yes, I did. After meeting PK and Lotta, I was eager to tell their story but faced numerous challenges, particularly the scarcity of archival footage from an event that took place over 50 years ago. Unfortunately, PK didn’t have a documentary team following him during his journey in the 1970s. Nonetheless, this obstacle encouraged me as a filmmaker and storyteller to think creatively.

MovieMaker: What was it like directing actors in this documentary?

Orlando von Einsiedel: We had a fantastic theater actor, Chirag Lobo, improvising as a younger PK. We followed parts of PK’s original cycling route across Asia and Europe, interacting with people along the way as he did. We would find individuals to cast on the day of shooting, explain that we were recreating PK’s journey 50 years later, and invite them to have a conversation with our actor.

The final result in the film draws inspiration from directors like Chloe Zhao, The Ross Brothers, Walter Salles, Michael Winterbottom, Jonas Poher Rasmussen, and many others who have innovated in documentary storytelling techniques.

MovieMaker: Did you ever think about turning this love story into a narrative film?

Orlando von Einsiedel: Yes, at the project's outset, I contemplated how to approach it in a documentary format. PK and Lotta’s story is dramatic enough to seem almost unbelievable and has the kind of arc that narrative films often pursue. However, since both PK and Lotta are alive and radiate warmth and charisma, it felt inappropriate not to find a way to tell this as a documentary at this moment in time.

MovieMaker: How did Priyanka Chopra Jonas come on board as an executive producer for this project?

Orlando von Einsiedel: One of our executive producers shared an early
