The Alternate Works of Spike Lee
Welcome to The B-Side! In this space, we focus on movie directors—not on the films that brought them fame or kept them in the spotlight, but on the works they created in between.
Today, we're spotlighting Spike Lee, one of our favorite filmmakers! Our B-Side selections for today are: Girl 6, Get on the Bus, Summer of Sam, Passing Strange, and Chi-Raq.
We'll explore what makes Lee a unique artist, his early films and initial successes, his status as a commercial icon, and his boundless, steadfast optimism in his style.
Spike Lee has noted that Crooklyn is the film that most fans mention to him. I've written about Lee's remarkable movie openings, and Conor and I celebrate his bold aesthetic. We also discuss his ambitious blending of tones, such as the minefield scene from Da 5 Bloods, which shifts from humorous to profoundly tragic.
There's also a conversation about our dream Patreon mini-podcast series, Macht Speed (a deep dive into Gabriel Macht's career), the feud between Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino, and the audacity it takes to create a film like She Hate Me.
