Exclusive New Stills from Carla Simón's Romería as Janus Films Announces June Release
After delivering one of the most emotionally resonant debuts of the last decade with Summer 1993, Carla Simón followed up her coming-of-age drama with her Golden Bear-winning film Alcarràs. Last year, she presented her evocative third feature, Romería, at the Cannes Film Festival. We are excited to announce that Janus Films will be releasing the film, which was selected for both the Cannes and New York Film Festivals, in theaters starting June 26 in New York at Film at Lincoln Center and Film Forum, followed by a nationwide expansion. In conjunction with the release announcement, we are showcasing a gallery of exclusive stills.
Here’s a brief synopsis: “The story revolves around 18-year-old Marina, who was orphaned at a young age, as she travels to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time. While attempting to navigate her newfound extended family, Marina reflects on her parents’ memories alongside the narratives shared by relatives, each holding their own secrets. Featuring a diverse and engaging ensemble cast of both professional and non-professional actors, led by the captivating newcomer Llúcia Garcia, Romería is a heartfelt and surprising film that explores how we honor the memories of those we have lost.”
Rory O’Connor remarked in his Cannes review, “Continuing in the subtle tone of her Golden Bear-winning Alcarràs, Carla Simón returns with Romería, another story about generational disconnect. This film reflects on the narratives families choose to share and those they choose to keep hidden, unfolding on Spain’s Atlantic coast where 18-year-old orphan Marina (Llúcia Garcia) seeks to connect with her paternal family. It is also a narrative about displacement and the longing for lost roots, themes that resonate deeply for a director whose parents died of AIDS during her childhood and who, at the same age, reconnected with her father’s family in Vigo, Galicia, the film's setting. Simón has always infused her filmmaking with autobiographical elements; Romería may represent her most personal project to date.”
