The Last One for the Road Trailer: Embark on a Drunken Journey Across Italy

A much more appealing way to start the summer movie season than any sequel or reboot that Hollywood is planning, Francesco Sossai’s charming road trip film The Last One for the Road is set to hit limited theaters this May. With a New York debut on May 1 at Film at Lincoln Center and IFC Center, and a Los Angeles release on May 8 at Laemmle Royal, the first trailer has just been unveiled for this Cannes and NYFF selection.

The synopsis reads: “Carlobianchi and Doriano, two minor Italian criminals, have hit rock bottom. They've struggled to pull off a legitimate scam since the 2008 financial crisis and now confront the dullness of approaching middle age. The return of a long-exiled criminal associate from Argentina presents them with a chance to recover long-hidden wealth, but can Carlobianchi and Doriano set aside their beers long enough to focus on their goal? During their leisurely, boozy journey through the Venetian countryside, they meet Giulio, a timid architecture student who begrudgingly becomes attached to the two and listens to their complaints about globalization and the fading of local culture. Every roadside bar holds the possibility of one last drink – unless the next one raises the stakes. Francesco Sossai’s impressive second feature is a blend of a road movie, a light-hearted caper, a homage to a disappearing industrial Italy, an untidy intergenerational journey, and a sprawling bender through time and space.”

Rory O’Connor commented in his review, “It doesn’t take long to figure out where you are in The Last One for the Road – the winding roads of Veneto, Italy, in Francesco Sossai’s charming new film reflect the unmistakable character of a life lived there. What you begin to question is the time of it all. The main characters are a duo of rogues in their 50s – one of whom, Doriano (Pierpaolo Capovilla), wears a shirt the color of a tobacco stain, while the other, Carlobianchi (Sergio Romano), sports a bushy mustache rarely seen on screen since Bruno Ganz’s similar one in The American Friend. It’s only after encountering a group of Gen Z students – notably one dressed in the headgear of an Egyptian goddess – late at night by a Venice canal that we realize our protagonists inhabit the present day. If it weren't for their natural talent for catching last calls, no matter the bar, you might almost consider them men out of place in time.”
