The Super Mario Galaxy Movie leads the box office, earning 2.5 million globally.
It's Mario Party time for Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment, and Nintendo, as their animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie raked in an impressive $372.5 million at the worldwide box office after hitting theaters globally this past weekend.
Following the success of 2023’s smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Galaxy achieved the largest global opening of the year to date, earning $190 million domestically during its five-day debut from Wednesday (including $130.9 million from Friday to Sunday), and ranking as the fifth largest global opening ever for an animated film, trailing behind Zootopia 2 ($560.3 million), Ne Zha 2 ($431.3 million), Moana 2 ($389.3 million), and its predecessor ($375.6 million).
With this release, Mario becomes the first animated franchise to have two films debut with over $350 million at the box office. The original film earned an astounding $1.36 billion globally throughout its run, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. Given this strong start, it wouldn't be surprising to see The Super Mario Galaxy Movie strive to surpass A Minecraft Movie ($961.2 million) for second place on that list.
