The Super Mario Galaxy Movie leads the box office with a global total of 2.5 million.
It's Mario Party time for Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment, and Nintendo, as their animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has brought in an impressive $372.5 million globally at the box office following its theatrical release this past weekend.
This sequel to the 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie achieved the largest worldwide opening of the year so far, earning $190 million in the U.S. over its five-day premiere from Wednesday (with $130.9 million from Friday to Sunday) and ranking as the fifth largest global opening for an animated film in history, behind Zootopia 2 ($560.3 million), Ne Zha 2 ($431.3 million), Moana 2 ($389.3 million), and its predecessor ($375.6 million).
With this debut, the Mario franchise becomes the first animated series to have two films open to over $350 million at the box office. The original film made a staggering $1.36 billion globally during its release, establishing it as the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. Given this strong start, it wouldn't be surprising for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to aim for a challenge against A Minecraft Movie ($961.2 million) for the second position on that list.
