Check out: Spike Jonze directs Zendaya in the Shape of Dreams campaign.
After 13 long years since Spike Jonze last directed a narrative feature, during which he has primarily focused on music videos, stand-up specials, advertisements, and overseeing the Jackass franchise, his latest directorial effort has finally arrived. It is a surreal three-minute video titled Shape of Dreams, featuring Zendaya, created for the Swiss sportswear brand On.
“It has been incredibly enjoyable to collaborate with Law and the On team on these essentials,” Zendaya remarked in a statement. “We aimed to design pieces that were versatile and comfortable to wear—styles that adapt to different moments. The initial idea was to make people feel confident and at ease, and we developed everything from that foundation. Partnering with Spike really brought that vision to life in a uniquely special way—the world he created added a whole new dimension.”
Regarding Zendaya’s recent role in The Drama, Jourdain Searles commented in our review, “Zendaya gives one of her finest performances, articulating the film’s racial themes by portraying a completely normal, loving partner who is marginalized by the story constructed around her. It’s clear from the outset that Emma is not a villain and does not harbor violent tendencies—at least not anymore. We see several flashbacks of Emma as an awkward teenager (played by Jordyn Curet), complete with glasses, frizzy hair, and lacking social skills. We discover that Emma was a military child who frequently moved and found it difficult to make friends in school when her family settled in Louisiana. She has a seldom-seen white mother and a Black military father (Damon Gupton), who later delivers the only meaningful speech at the wedding. Although The Drama does not delve into Emma’s biracial identity or her interracial marriage, her character’s reveal brings to light Charlie’s anxieties about marrying a Black woman.”
