Watch: Spike Jonze Directs Zendaya for the Shape of Dreams Campaign
It has been 13 long years since Spike Jonze last directed a narrative film, and with no feature projects currently underway, his recent creative endeavors have primarily consisted of music videos, stand-up specials, advertisements, and overseeing the Jackass franchise. His newest directing effort is a surreal three-minute video titled Shape of Dreams, featuring Zendaya, made for the Swiss sportswear brand On.
Zendaya expressed her excitement, stating, “Collaborating with Law and the On team on these essentials has been incredibly enjoyable. We aimed to create pieces that are versatile and comfortable to wear – styles that can transition with you through various moments. We started with the concept of making people feel confident and effortless, and we built everything from that foundation. Collaborating with Spike truly brought that vision to life in a unique way – the world he envisioned added an entirely new layer to it.”
Regarding Zendaya’s most recent role in The Drama, Jourdain Searles noted in our review, “Zendaya gives one of her finest performances, illustrating the film’s racial themes by portraying a perfectly ordinary, loving partner who is marginalized by the narrative surrounding her. It becomes evident from the outset that Emma is no antagonist and harbors no violent tendencies – at least not anymore. We are shown several flashbacks of Emma as a socially awkward teenager (played by Jordyn Curet), complete with glasses, frizzy hair, and little in the way of social skills. We discover that Emma was a military child who moved frequently and had trouble making friends when her family settled in Louisiana. She has a white mother, who is seldom seen in the film, and a Black military father (Damon Gupton), who delivers the only meaningful speech at the wedding. Although The Drama doesn’t address Emma’s biracial background or her entry into an interracial marriage, her character’s journey reveals Charlie’s apprehension about marrying a Black woman.”
