10 Movie Suggestions for When You Want to Get Away

Here are some movie suggestions for when you need to unwind: to alleviate stress, to take a break from thinking, or to escape from a world that feels increasingly unfamiliar.

There's something comforting about becoming engrossed in someone else's issues, allowing us to forget our own — in cinematic landscapes that seem connected yet distinctly different from our reality. Here are seven films perfect for a brief escape.

And if you have any recommendations, please share them with us.

      **Top Secret (1984)**

Val Kilmer stars in *Top Secret!*, a Paramount Pictures film.

This film is one of the most delightfully ridiculous, low-stakes comedies ever made, showcasing Val Kilmer's charisma and dance talent.

It’s an intentionally foolish blend of a classic Elvis film and a war thriller, featuring ’50s style musical performances and a clever mix of visual gags that critique filmmaking itself.

If you enjoyed *Airplane!* but haven't seen this sequel from Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker, prepare for a fantastic experience. It’s one of our most frequently recommended comedy films.

      **The Empire Strikes Back (1980)**

At a bachelor party cabin in Lake Tahoe, a friend remarked that this movie felt like a strange art film when we watched an old VHS of *The Empire Strikes Back* instead of heading to the casinos.

Despite causing me frustration as a child — with the heroes not emerging victorious — this film brings me endless comfort as an adult. I greatly relate to Han, Leia, and their crew as they cleverly navigate their troubles, often in unconventional and chaotic ways.

The seemingly obvious choices don’t always yield the best outcomes. Small victories sometimes lead to larger defeats and vice versa. However, we trust that Luke's innate goodness will ultimately prevail over the Dark Side.

Allow yourself to be drawn into this peculiar art film.

**The Silence of the Lambs (1991)**

At times when I struggle to sleep, I challenge myself with difficult problems and their solutions. *Silence of the Lambs* follows Clarice Starling through an intricate maze — both literally and metaphorically — as she navigates her way out using not only skill but profound empathy.

It’s crucial to note that she uncovers the key clue leading her to Jame Gumb (Ted Levine) by discovering a hiding spot that numerous male investigators have missed.

Additionally, the performances are mesmerizing, especially Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s (Anthony Hopkins) captivating direct-to-camera lines that make it impossible to think about anything else.

While one could analyze this film in the light of contemporary discussions about identity and representation, we suggest refraining for reasons outlined here.

This is certainly one of those recommendations meant only for individuals with a strong stomach.

      **Anora (2024)**

*Anora* is, among other aspects, breathtakingly beautiful. Filmed on a shoestring budget, with many scenes shot on the streets of Brooklyn without the usual permits, it captures stunning visuals, from the glow of strip-club lights to an oligarch’s mansion in Las Vegas, and especially, towards the end, a weather event. (We won’t spoil too much.)

You quickly immerse yourself in the life of Ani (Mikey Madison), a stripper who is offered what seems like a fairytale escape from her challenging existence. However, complications ensue.

It’s also humorous in unexpected ways, often causing laughter in moments that feel inappropriate — and those can lead to the best types of laughter.

      **Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)**

Are you in desperate need of a day off? Live vicariously through the carefree suburban rebel Ferris Bueller, played charmingly by Matthew Broderick, as he tries to give his uptight friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) a fun day along with his girlfriend Sloan (Mia Sara).

Be prepared to find yourself quoting this film endlessly, from the obvious (“Bueller? Bueller?”) to the wonderfully absurd (“Do you have a kiss for daddy?”).

This wonderfully offbeat film serves as a reminder that you don't have to be present every single day.

      **Casablanca (1942)**

“Ilsa, I’m not adept at nobility, but it’s clear that the troubles of three insignificant people don’t amount to much in this chaotic world,” says Rick (Humphrey Bogart) in one of the greatest films ever created. “Someday you’ll understand that. Now, here’s looking at you, kid.”

Whatever your issues may be, Ilsa (
