A live-action adaptation of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest is on the way, directed by Marielle Heller.
Audiences are set to revisit the world of Ferngully as news breaks that Nightbitch director Marielle Heller will be adapting the beloved 1992 animated film into a live-action adventure for the big screen.
As reported by Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is advancing the project, which revolves around Crysta, a fairy residing in an Australian forest who accidentally shrinks a logger named Zak down to her size. Together, they strive to protect their rainforest home from loggers and a malevolent toxic force known as Hexxus. Heller, known for her work on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me?, will direct from her own script.
The original film, released in 1992 and directed by Bill Kroyer, featured voice performances from Robin Williams, Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater, and Tim Curry, with a soundtrack that showcased songs by Sheena Easton and Elton John. Despite its talented cast, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest was somewhat of a disappointment at the box office, earning only $32.7 million globally. However, its success in the home rental market, its timely ecological themes, and comparisons to Avatar have helped solidify its legacy.
