The classic comic The Phantom is getting a live-action television series.
The legendary comic character The Phantom is poised for another chance at live-action recognition through a television series helmed by the director of Candy Cane Lane.
According to Variety, Reginald Hudlin (Marshall) is set to produce and direct the series, which is currently in early development at King Features. Hudlin has a background in comic writing, having contributed to Black Panther for Marvel Comics, and he also owns a comic book company, Milestone Media.
Created by Lee Falk in 1936, The Phantom is also known as “The Ghost Who Walks” or “The Man Who Cannot Die,” and he is often recognized as the first costumed superhero. The character has generational powers, with the mantle of The Phantom being passed down from father to son. The original Phantom was a 16th-century sailor named Christopher Walker, and over the course of 90 years, the character has evolved through daily newspaper strips and comic books, leading to iterations like ‘Phantom 2040’ and the latest stories released by Mad Cave Comics in 2025.
The character's most significant appearance to date was in the 1996 film The Phantom, which featured Billy Zane (Titanic) in the lead role, along with Catherine Zeta-Jones (Traffic) and Kristy Swanson (OG Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The film, which had a budget of $45 million, debuted to only $5.7 million in North America and ultimately grossed a mere $23.5 million worldwide.
