      Jack Knight hails from a lineage of superheroes. His father was Starman, a WWII superhero, and he is also related to the original Phantom Lady. Nevertheless, he was happy to let his older brother David use the Cosmic Rod as the champion of Opal City. Jack preferred to focus on his interests in history and popular culture. This changed dramatically after David was murdered, prompting Jack to become Starman following an assassination attempt on his own life. Armed with a prototype staff abandoned by his father, Jack defeated the assassins and took on the role of the city's protector, despite his reluctance to embrace the superhero lifestyle.
