Romería Trailer: Carla Simón's Cannes and NYFF Feature Set to Premiere This June
After delivering one of the most heartfelt debuts of the last decade with Summer 1993, Carla Simón followed up her coming-of-age drama with her Golden Bear-winning film Alcarràs, and last year, she presented her poignant third feature, Romería, at Cannes. With a release set to begin on June 26 in New York at Film at Lincoln Center and Film Forum, followed by a broader national rollout, Janus Films has now released the new trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “The film centers on 18-year-old Marina, who was orphaned at a young age, as she visits Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time. While she attempts to navigate her place within an extended family she has never been a part of, Marina combines her memories of her parents with the stories of relatives who have their own hidden truths. Featuring a large and dynamic cast of both professional and non-professional actors, led by the captivating newcomer Llúcia Garcia, Romería is a tender, unexpected, and emotionally resonant film about how we honor the memory of those we have lost.”
Rory O’Connor remarked in his Cannes review, “Continuing in the understated style of her Golden Bear-winning Alcarràs, Carla Simón returns with Romería, yet another narrative exploring intergenerational disconnection. It’s a film about the narratives families choose to share and the ones they keep buried, set against the backdrop of Spain’s Atlantic coast, where 18-year-old orphan Marina (Llúcia Garcia) hopes to reconnect with her paternal relatives. Additionally, it addresses themes of displacement and the longing for lost heritage, which resonate deeply for a director whose parents passed away due to AIDS when she was still a child, and who met her father’s family in Vigo, Galicia, the film's setting, at the same age. Simón has consistently drawn from her own life experiences as a filmmaker; Romería may be her most personal project to date.”
