Romería Trailer: Carla Simón’s Cannes and NYFF Spotlight to Premiere This June.
After creating one of the most profoundly resonant debuts of the last decade with *Summer 1993*, Carla Simón followed up her coming-of-age drama with the Golden Bear-winning *Alcarràs*, and last year she presented her moving third feature, *Romería*, at Cannes. With a release set to begin on June 26 in New York at Film at Lincoln Center and Film Forum, followed by a nationwide rollout, Janus Films has now released the new trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “The film centers on 18-year-old Marina, who became an orphan at a young age, as she visits Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the very first time. While trying to find her place within a family she has never known, Marina reconstructs memories of her parents intertwined with the stories shared by relatives, each harboring their own secrets. Featuring a large and charismatic ensemble cast that includes both actors and non-professionals, and led by the captivating newcomer Llúcia Garcia, *Romería* is a poignant, unexpected, and deeply felt exploration of how we keep the memories of those we've lost alive.”
Rory O’Connor noted in his review from Cannes, “Continuing in the understated style of her Golden Bear-winning *Alcarràs*, Carla Simón returns with *Romería*, another narrative of generational dissonance. This story reflects on the narratives families choose to share and those they choose to conceal, unfolding on Spain’s Atlantic coast, where 18-year-old orphan Marina (Llúcia Garcia) hopes to reconnect with her paternal family. It also touches on themes of displacement and a longing for lost roots, sentiments that resonate deeply with a director whose parents passed away from AIDS when she was a child, and who encountered her father’s family in the town of Vigo, Galicia—the film’s setting—at the same age. Simón has always drawn from her life experiences in her filmmaking; *Romería* may be her most intimate work so far.”
