Exclusive Interview – Michael Beach Discusses Dirty Hands, Collaborations, and Remembers Patrick Muldoon
Tai Freligh speaks with Michael Beach, an actor from Dirty Hands…
The crime thriller genre has studied the disastrous outcomes of a single poor choice for quite some time, and writer-director Kevin Interdonato’s Dirty Hands distills that concept to its most unvarnished, gritty form. Now available on VOD and digital platforms, the film morphs a typical drug deal into an urgent, 80-minute struggle for survival, featuring a strong ensemble cast that includes Patrick Muldoon (Starship Troopers, Melrose Place), Denise Richards (Wild Things, The World Is Not Enough), and seasoned actor Michael Beach (Waiting to Exhale, Third Watch).
For Beach, whose career spans over 40 years from his breakout roles to the harsh power dynamics in Mayor of Kingstown, this project signifies a return to the intense, driving energy of independent cinema.
In a discussion that carries heavy significance given the recent passing of co-star Patrick Muldoon just before the film's release, Beach shares insights on the precise choreography of the climactic shootout and the visual nods to iconic 70s cinema. For Flickering Myth, Tai Freligh spoke with Beach about developing the complex character of Dally, the challenge of creating tension on screen, and honoring the legacy of his fellow artists in a constantly changing industry.
Tai Freligh: It's great to talk with you again. I know it's a challenging time with the news about Patrick, and I wanted to start by asking about your experiences working with him. You both bring such powerful energy to the screen in Dirty Hands.
Michael Beach: Anyone who knew Pat would tell you he was brimming with energy and life. He was an amazing person. Even when he said he was tired, his positive spirit always shone through. It's truly a loss that he's not with us anymore.
Tai Freligh: That must hit close to home for you. I’m turning 55 this year.
Michael Beach: Definitely. It’s becoming more frequent. I'm about to be 63, and the fragility of life is becoming clearer. Pat took care of himself, but life can be unpredictable. Embrace every day and hold your loved ones close.
Tai Freligh: Since we last spoke during the Aquaman sequel, how has your view of the industry shifted?
Michael Beach: I distinguish the industry from the work itself. I've been a professional actor for four decades and love the craft. However, the industry can be ruthless and seems to be getting harsher.
Tai Freligh: Dirty Hands really unsettled me! It’s such a tight, high-stakes thriller. What attracted you to Kevin’s script?
Michael Beach: To be honest, it was more about Kevin. I connected with him on social media, and we just hit it off. When he had a script, I was eager to participate because of him, not just the content of the script.
Tai Freligh: That coat in the movie gives off serious Shaft vibes.
Michael Beach: That was purely Kevin's idea. He envisioned the 70s style and found the ideal coat to reflect that look.
Tai Freligh: In that final scene set in the parking garage, how much of it is choreographed versus spontaneous?
Michael Beach: Even though I wasn't heavily featured in that scene, I know they invested considerable time in choreography. Indie films thrive on immediacy and raw energy, often resulting in more immersive performances.
Tai Freligh: What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects you're enthusiastic about?
Michael Beach: I have a film coming up titled Empire City with Gerard Butler and Hailey Atwell—it’s an action-comedy. We filmed it in Australia, but it’s set in New York, utilizing innovative volume technology. It’s very exciting!
Michael Beach is a seasoned actor in both theater and film, with a career that spans more than 40 years. He is renowned for his impactful performances in classics like Waiting to Exhale and Lean on Me, along with his long-running roles in television series such as Third Watch, Sons of Anarchy, and Mayor of Kingstown, establishing him as one of the industry's most respected and reliable figures.
