Exclusive Interview – Michael Beach discusses Dirty Hands, his collaborations, and reflects on Patrick Muldoon.
Tai Freligh converses with Dirty Hands actor Michael Beach...
The crime thriller genre has consistently delved into the dire repercussions of a single poor choice, and writer-director Kevin Interdonato’s Dirty Hands distills this concept to its fundamental, gritty core. Available now on VOD and digital platforms, the film turns a standard drug transaction into a frantic, 80-minute struggle for survival, featuring a strong ensemble cast including Patrick Muldoon (Starship Troopers, Melrose Place), Denise Richards (Wild Things, The World Is Not Enough), and veteran actor Michael Beach (Waiting to Exhale, Third Watch).
For Beach, whose career spans more than 40 years from his breakout roles to the intense power dynamics in Mayor of Kingstown, this project signifies a return to the raw, dynamic spirit of independent filmmaking.
In a discussion that has gained profound importance following the unexpected passing of co-star Patrick Muldoon just days before the film's release, Beach reflects on the technical intricacies of the climactic shootout and the visual tributes to 1970s cinema legends. For Flickering Myth, Tai Freligh spoke with Beach about developing the formidable character of Dally, the challenge of creating tension on screen, and honoring the legacy of his fellow artists in a continuously changing industry.
Tai Freligh: It’s great to talk to you again. I know this is a difficult time with the news about Patrick, and I’d like to begin by asking about your experiences working alongside him. You both radiate intense energy in Dirty Hands.
Michael Beach: Anyone who knew Pat understood how full of energy and life he was. He was a wonderful person. Even when he mentioned feeling tired, his positive energy was always shining through. It’s a tragedy he’s no longer with us.
Tai Freligh: That must resonate deeply with you. I’ll be turning 55 this year.
Michael Beach: Definitely. It’s happening more frequently. I'm nearing 63, and the fragility of life is becoming increasingly clear. Pat took good care of himself, but life is unpredictable. We should appreciate every day and value those around us.
Tai Freligh: Since we last talked during the Aquaman sequel, how has your view on the industry shifted?
Michael Beach: I differentiate between the industry and the work itself. After 40 years as a professional actor, my love for the craft remains. However, the industry is often ruthless, and it seems to be worsening.
Tai Freligh: Dirty Hands really unnerved me! It’s such a tightly wound, high-stakes thriller. What attracted you to Kevin’s script?
Michael Beach: To be honest, it was more about Kevin. I first connected with him on social media, and we instantly clicked. When he had a script later, I was eager to be involved because of him, not just the script itself.
Tai Freligh: That coat in the film—definitely evokes a Shaft vibe.
Michael Beach: That was entirely Kevin’s vision. He aimed for that 70s aesthetic, and he found the perfect coat to embody that style.
Tai Freligh: In that final scene in the parking garage, what’s the balance between choreography and spontaneous energy?
Michael Beach: Although I wasn’t heavily involved in that particular scene, I know they invested significant time into its choreography. Indie films thrive on urgency and raw energy, which often leads to more immersive performances.
Tai Freligh: What’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects you’re looking forward to?
Michael Beach: I have a film titled Empire City coming out, featuring Gerard Butler and Hailey Atwell—it's a sort of action-comedy. We filmed it in Australia, but it’s set in New York, utilizing innovative volume work. It’s really exciting!
Michael Beach is an experienced actor with a career exceeding 40 years. He is best recognized for his impactful performances in classics such as Waiting to Exhale and Lean on Me, along with his extensive television roles in Third Watch, Sons of Anarchy, and Mayor of Kingstown, establishing himself as one of the industry’s most respected and reliable talents.
