Exclusive Interview – Nickey van Tooren discusses his latest film, A Tough Pill to Swallow.

      In an industry where performers frequently await the ideal role, Nickey van Tooren is taking matters into her own hands. With her forthcoming film A Tough Pill to Swallow, the Dutch-born, Los Angeles-based actress firmly establishes her voice as a storyteller by writing, producing, and starring in a project that delves into themes of identity, inner turmoil, and the delicate balance between self-acceptance and self-denial.

      The film revolves around Skye, a young woman struggling with her identity who faces her first same-sex kiss with her best friend. This encounter sets off a profoundly personal and challenging journey, compelling Skye to choose between keeping a relationship intact or attempting to suppress a part of who she is.

      For van Tooren, this project represents more than just another credit; it signifies a significant creative milestone. “I wanted to create something I could truly immerse myself in,” she states. “A character who’s complex, flawed, and multi-dimensional. Skye isn’t solely defined by her sexuality; she's dealing with fear, identity, and the conflict of her self-perception relative to how the world perceives her.”

      Her dedication to complexity aligns with van Tooren’s broader artistic philosophy.       “I begin with the world,” she explains. “I need to comprehend the environment, the context, and the reality my character inhabits. Only then do I develop the character from within.”

The project is also personally meaningful, as van Tooren stars alongside her real-life partner, Marly Reece Feigin, who directs the film.

      The resulting on-screen chemistry is undeniable, heightening the emotional stakes of the narrative. “There’s a truth in our connection that can’t be faked,” she observes. “It allowed us to bring a sense of authenticity to the relationship that’s central to the film.”

      Like many independent films, the journey was fraught with challenges. Early directional setbacks led to reshoots, ultimately highlighting the need for clear communication and creative alignment on set. “It was a learning experience,” van Tooren reflects. “We recognized how crucial it is to have a director who can steer performances, particularly in emotionally intense scenes. Once we made that adjustment, everything transformed.”

      The physical demands of the role tested her stamina as well, including wearing a wig that, while essential to the character, was quite uncomfortable. “It definitely assisted me in embodying Skye,” she laughs. “But it came with headaches, literally. Yet, it was completely worth it.”

      Despite the serious nature of the subject, moments behind the scenes provided a lighter balance. A day of shooting at the pharmacy turned into an unexpected cast and crew gathering, with team members relaxing outside between takes, fostering a sense of community that extended into the final phases of production.

      Now in the last stages of post-production, A Tough Pill to Swallow is gearing up for its festival debut, with aspirations to reach broader audiences after its premiere. For van Tooren, the intention is straightforward yet profoundly purposeful. “I want people to feel something,” she expresses. “To question, reflect, and perhaps see parts of themselves in the story.”

      As she continues to establish her presence in the industry, one thing is evident: Nickey van Tooren is not waiting for anyone's permission.
