      The Sheep Detectives, 2026.

      SYNOPSIS:

Every evening, a shepherd reads a murder mystery aloud, pretending that his sheep comprehend the story. When he is discovered dead, the sheep immediately suspect foul play and believe they know how to solve the case. Sheep are deemed the key to happiness by shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman, charmingly establishing a convincing connection with a CGI flock that has limited screen time). He tends to their needs, cares for them, heals them, and concludes his day by narrating murder mysteries to them. While this may sound a bit eccentric to some readers, it's remarkable to learn that The Sheep Detectives, a heartwarming and family-friendly whodunnit featuring talking sheep, draws inspiration from a book by Leonie Swann and is brought to life by director Kyle Balda (Minions) and screenwriter Craig Mazin (The Last of Us TV series). Quite a surprising combination, isn't it? Fortunately, the film maintains a consistent tone, even as it includes some poignant moments that enhance its otherwise lighthearted, comedic, and enjoyable nature.

Following the introduction of George’s daily routine, the small Irish town, its notable residents, and the sheep’s unique personalities, the plot thickens when George is found dead (although offscreen, which might still disturb younger viewers). It falls to his flock, especially their leader Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), to apply their knowledge of fictional murder mysteries to real life, leading a clueless police officer (Nicholas Braun) and a budding photojournalist (Nicholas Galitzine) who is present for the local cultural festival to the clues they uncover.

It’s undeniable that the premise is quite absurd, and having a director known for creating Minions doesn't necessarily inspire confidence in sharp humor. However, the filmmakers utilize various facts about sheep, weaving them into the thematic elements rather than merely relying on them for occasional jokes. This approach brings emotional depth and valuable life lessons about acceptance, grief, memory, and family for children.

Certainly, one might argue that much of this is typical fare for a kids' movie, but the exploration of prejudices through the storyline of a runt known as The Winter Lamb, who is indeed the black sheep of the flock, or the depiction of animals' forgetfulness to address the significance of memory and cherishing sadness in the heart is rather unique. Furthermore, the stereotype of sheep being the dumbest animals is both challenged and, based on some quick research, proven incorrect (they can remember up to 50 individuals for years, which could complicate larger, more expensive sequels but may also make them more intriguing). Yes, I would be interested in seeing another installment.

Expanding on that notion, Amazon's decision to present a different type of family-friendly whodunnit in response to Netflix is remarkably clever; while the story is self-contained, one can imagine that the distributor will have more ideas in the pipeline if this film succeeds.

In the film, Lily, the smartest member of the flock, teams up with the wise Mopple (voiced by Chris O’Dowd) and an outcast named Sebastian (voiced by Bryan Cranston), among others who primarily serve as comedic relief for various age groups. This includes a duo of rams eager to charge into anything and a nearly blind sheep determined to help (one particularly amusing POV shot depicts him bumping into obstacles within an RV), along with a notable Winter Lamb (voiced by Bella Ramsey), who is eager to assist but is unfairly judged as unlovable.

Together, they investigate their community, which includes a butcher, a competitor farmer interested in acquiring George’s flock before his mysterious demise, a woman (Hong Chau) with a long-held crush on George, a potentially unscrupulous lawyer portrayed by Emma Thompson, George’s estranged daughter (Molly Gordon), who is fidgety and often fiddles with a metal bracelet, a long-lost son abroad, and a priest. The latter provides both comedic interpretations of religion from a sheep’s perspective and thought-provoking insights into the responsibilities of leadership.

The Sheep Detectives is both charming and intelligent, featuring clever misdirection that obscures the identity of the culprit, even if seasoned genre fans might catch on to the film's conventions. However, this can be easily forgiven since the movie is family-oriented without being overly simplistic for children; it successfully engages them with valuable messages and concepts borrowed from more adult-targeted whodunnit literature and
