As enthusiasm for superhero movies diminishes, the western genre seems to be experiencing a revival. Steven Spielberg is contemplating a new film in this category, and now Park Chan-wook has turned his attention to a project he has been passionate about for quite a while.

The director of The Decision to Leave and No Other Choice will take the helm of The Brigands of Rattlecreek, a western written by S. Craig Zahler, who has recently started filming his next project, The Bookie & the Bruiser, featuring Vince Vaughn, Theo James, and Fred Melamed. Park’s notable cast includes Tang Wei, his star from Decision to Leave, along with Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, and Pedro Pascal, according to Deadline.

The story revolves around “a sheriff and a doctor seeking vengeance against a band of robbers who take advantage of a fierce thunderstorm to loot and instill fear in the residents of a small town. The narrative will explore themes central to Park’s body of work, such as revenge, retribution, the repercussions of violence, and the significance of memory and family, set this time in the American West.”

The script, which made the Black List back in 2006, has had a prolonged development process, with McConaughey attached since 2019 when Amazon revived the project. It will now be presented to potential buyers at the Cannes market.
