The friendliest ghost is set to return to the small screen as Disney+ is working on a live-action *Casper* series, produced by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston of *Goosebumps*, in collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

This series is described as “a modern reinterpretation of the classic ghost tale” and is expected to adopt a tone that is more serious and darker than typical *Casper* portrayals, akin to Netflix’s *Wednesday* in contrast to earlier versions of *The Addams Family*.

*Casper* tells the story of a young ghost and his escapades with the living, while his three playful uncles entertain themselves by scaring people. Created in 1945, Casper has appeared in various animated specials, TV series, and comics, with the 1995 live-action film featuring Christina Ricci, Malachi Pearson, Bill Pullman, and Devon Sawa being regarded as a classic from the '90s.

Letterman and Winston will handle the writing, with Letterman also directing. They will serve as executive producers alongside Spielberg, who produced the 1995 film through Amblin Entertainment.

Disney secured the series amid a bidding competition among streaming services, but it has yet to officially greenlight *Casper* for a complete series order. We will need to wait to see how the development progresses and how this darker interpretation is approached.
