Whit Stillman is set to make a comeback with A Night at Claridge’s, featuring Adam Brody in the lead role. Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan and Ana de Armas will star in Felipe Gálvez’s film Impunity.
We see about one Whit Stillman film every decade, making the timeline from 2016's Love & Friendship to the latest announcement quite fitting. Variety reports that Adam Brody (known from the aforementioned film and Stillman's Amazon pilot The Cosmopolitans) alongside Laura Carmichael will star in A Night at Claridge’s, an adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s 1947 novel The Slaves of Solitude. It's worth mentioning that Hamilton was also the source for George Cukor’s Gaslight and Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope—providing a strong lineage among those whose works are still being adapted for film.
Tom Bennett (also reprising his role from Love & Friendship) and screen veteran Susan Hampshire will join the cast, with Altitude presenting the project to buyers at Cannes this month. Based on Hamilton's novel, the story revolves around Miss Roach (Carmichael), who, in South England around 1943, is displaced from her home in London and begins residing with Vicki, a “vivacious German woman,” and the “ridiculous bully” Mr. Thwaites. A love triangle involving Vicki develops with the arrival of American lieutenant Dayton Pike, igniting “intense psychological conflict,” violence, and even death. A “mysterious man, an eccentric boss, and a remarkably elegant hotel” contribute to a resolution, suggesting material that aligns well with Stillman’s themes of petite bourgeoise tensions.
Variety also shares news about a new feature from Felipe Gálvez, whose film The Settlers has emerged as one of Argentina’s standout releases of this decade. Like many international filmmakers, he’s transitioning from a Cannes success to working with English-speaking stars; this arrangement seems more promising than typical ones, especially with the return of co-writers Mariano Llinás and Antonia Girardi. Sebastian Stan and Ana de Armas will headline and executive produce the espionage thriller Impunity, adapted from Philippe Sands’ 38 Londres Street. The project is set to film in Spain, Chile, and the U.K., and encompasses an English- and Spanish-language narrative centered around one of the most significant legal cases of the 20th century: the 1998 arrest of Augusto Pinochet in London.
The story incorporates espionage through “two covert operations”: one features “a mercenary recruited by an NGO,” while the other involves “a Chilean envoy,” both of whom become ensnared in “a maze of conspiracies, betrayals, and geopolitical tactics—only to find that the true struggle for justice lies far from the courtroom, in the shadows.” Co-starring in Impunity are Alfredo Castro (The Club), Antonia Zegers (Too Late to Die Young), and Alejandro Goic (1976), with Rei Pictures producing and Pathé set to distribute it across France, Switzerland, and the Benelux region.
Deadline has reported that Charlie Kaufman will commence shooting Later the War, his first feature since 2020's I’m Thinking of Ending Things, next year. Channing Tatum, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran will star in this adaptation of Iddo Gefen’s short story “Debby’s Dream House,” which follows Peekman (Tatum), “a wildly popular actor-director known for blockbuster physical comedies featuring his wife Kiki (Thompson).” Doubting that his success indicates depth, he—similar to Jerry Lewis with The Day the Clown Cried—“attempts a serious Holocaust film, while Kiki pursues her own one-woman show,” crossing paths with Debora (Ferran), “a poet who is unaware of his identity,” and upon seeking her validation, ultimately fails.
In true Kaufman style, Later the War “interlaces present-day reality, films within films, and surreal dream sequences to create a realm where Peekman and Kiki, having lost themselves in their quest for fame, may rediscover their way back to reality.” The production taking place in Cyprus hints at striking, desolate landscapes reminiscent of Crimes of the Future—or at least a more visually appealing alternative to a tax-friendly shoot in Shreveport.
