Discussions intensify regarding the direction of DC's film featuring Deathstroke and Bane.
In the initial phase following James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership appointment at DC Studios, it was announced that screenwriter Matthew Orton (Moon Knight) had been chosen to pen a script for a team-up film featuring the supervillains Deathstroke and Bane. Currently, it appears that the project is nearing the selection of a director.
As reported by Deadline, Greg Mottola, known for directing Superbad and Keeping Up with the Joneses, is the leading candidate to helm the film. Although he is primarily recognized for his comedic work, including the new Peacock series The Miniature Wife starring Elizabeth Banks, Mottola has experience within the new DC Universe, having directed two episodes of the second season of James Gunn’s Peacemaker.
The report from Deadline further mentions that while Mottola is the top choice for directing the film, no deal has been finalized, and other candidates remain in consideration. Jeff Sneider from The Hot Mic has indicated that Ilya Naishuller, known for Hardcore Henry and Nobody, is also in the running. Additionally, the project is expected to undergo a rewrite once a director is chosen.
If the untitled team-up project moves ahead, Bane will mark the second Batman villain to lead a feature in the revamped DC Universe, following the horror-themed Clayface, which is set to premiere in October as the third film in the new DCU, following last year’s Superman and upcoming Supergirl in June. Concurrently, Gunn is in production on his Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, while Matt Reeves has commenced filming The Batman Part II, both of which are scheduled for release in 2027.
