Exclusive Trailer for Nostalgia for the Future: Charlotte Rampling Explores Chris Marker’s Universe at Cannes Premiere

      This year’s remarkable Cannes Classics lineup will feature the premiere of a new documentary that delves into the expansive world of the legendary Chris Marker, who has since passed away. Directed by Brecht Debackere, Nostalgia for the Future, narrated by Charlotte Rampling, follows an enigmatic archivist as they sift through the 550 boxes of Marker’s estate to piece together a portrait of a man who chose to remain hidden behind his own imagery. In anticipation of its world premiere, we are excited to exclusively reveal the first trailer.

      The synopsis reads: “With narration by Charlotte Rampling, Nostalgia for the Future takes us into the intricate realm of Chris Marker, who is recognized as the ‘best-known author of unknown films.’ Throughout his life, he obscured his identity behind a cloak of pseudonyms and feline imagery. As the archivist navigates a wealth of personal documents and fragments of film, they strive to interpret the man through the remnants he left behind. By reinterpreting and recontextualizing Marker’s body of work, the film presents his images as ‘time machines,’ converting the archive into a vibrant landscape of memory. Nostalgia for the Future reflects on themes of memory, identity, and the influence of our past images on the futures we envision.”

      “Nine years ago, the concept for a film about the most recognized director of unknown films, Chris Marker, took shape,” shared director Brecht Debackere. “Like many others, I started with the classics—La Jetée, Sans Soleil, A Grin Without a Cat. However, that initial fascination blossomed into an eight-year journey of exploration, diving into his writings, his collaborations, and the extensive, overwhelming archive he left behind.”
