The Rivals of Amziah King Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Stars in Andrew Patterson's Crime Thriller

      After the remarkable success of his debut film The Vast of Night, Andrew Patterson's second feature, The Rivals of Amziah King, has been long anticipated. It premiered at SXSW last year and is set to hit theaters starting August 14. The film features a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Owen Teague, Scott Shepherd, Rob Morgan, and Tony Revolori. Black Bear Pictures has just released the first trailer.

      In his review, John Fink noted, “Much like the church potluck where Amziah King introduces his former foster daughter Kateri, The Rivals of Amziah King is an enjoyable blend of genres and tones, mixing bluegrass music, comedy, revenge, and heist-thriller elements into a delightful homestyle spread filled with quirky characters and rich Southern accents. It serves as a robust follow-up to the potential Andrew Patterson showcased in his inventive debut, The Vast of Night—despite this mash-up feeling somewhat uneven and indulgent at times, characterized by the prominent use of formal techniques, from slow-motion to ironic music.”

      Here’s the synopsis: “Set in the deeply rural backwoods of Oklahoma, the film follows the charming and musically talented Amaziah King (McConaughey), who leads a bluegrass band of misfits while managing the top honey production business in the area. When Amaziah's estranged foster daughter unexpectedly returns, he jumps at the chance to rekindle their connection and establish a family business. However, the honey industry is cutthroat, and Amaziah's competitors threaten to undermine everything he has worked to create.”
