Damon Lindelof discusses his unreleased Star Wars film.

On the eve of Star Wars making its return to theaters with the more predictable spin-off, Mandalorian & Grogu, Damon Lindelof has shared insights about being dismissed from his own Star Wars project. The writer known for Lost and Watchmen discussed this on the House of R podcast, where the conversation shifted to his envisioned adventure set in a galaxy far, far away, one of several concepts that have fallen by the wayside at Lucasfilm.

Lindelof mentioned that he was brought on board after he pitched what he envisioned for a Star Wars film, stating, “and then two years later I was fired." He elaborated, “Our goal was to explore a conversation in the film, addressing the conflict between nostalgia and revisionism. We wanted to introduce a Protestant Reformation within Star Wars. It didn’t pan out."

He noted that while Lucasfilm appreciated the concept, he believed it lacked a sense of risk. He added, “Creating the script was quite challenging; it was slow…the tone was difficult to nail down, especially in relation to the canon, what connection it had to Episode IX, and whether it would kick off a new trilogy."

Lindelof had collaborated on an initial draft of the film with Justin Britt-Gibson (Lanterns), and Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was set to direct. Production was set to commence in February 2024, with the premiere slated for December 19, 2025.
