Ranking All Seven Batman Actors from Least Impressive (Clooney) to Most Impressive

Here is a ranking of all seven live-action Batman actors — an effort to analyze what contributes to a great Batman performance.

We are not including animated Batman portrayals, such as the remarkable Kevin Conroy, whom we hold in high regard. Our focus is on live-action, as voice acting differs from on-screen acting.

These evaluations are subjective, and there are strong opinions about Batman, so feel free to share your thoughts if you disagree.

Now, let’s rank all seven Batman actors from worst to best, starting with (apologies) the least favored:

      **George Clooney**

We couldn't provide a harsher critique of George Clooney’s Batman than he has of himself. He portrayed the Caped Crusader in just one film, 1997’s Batman & Robin, and offered a scathing self-review.

"When I say Batman & Robin is a terrible film, I always add, ‘I was terrible in it,’" Clooney shared with GQ. "Because I was, number one. But it also lets you say, ‘Having acknowledged my poor performance, I can point out that none of these other elements were successful either.’ You know? Lines like ‘Freeze, Freeze!’”

He makes a valid point: No actor could have succeeded with the role as it was written.

      **Ben Affleck**

While we may invite the ire of Snyderverse fans, here we go.

Ben Affleck had the potential to be the best Batman; he has the stature and frame to be intimidating, paired with the depth and nuance to portray the intelligence, brilliance, and internal conflict of a billionaire by day and vigilante by night, torn between his identities: Which one is the façade, Bruce or Batman?

However, the films featuring Affleck’s Batman—Batman v Superman and Justice League (both under Joss Whedon and Zack Snyder)—were chaotic and leaned too heavily into a serious, militaristic portrayal of Batman.

They left little room to explore one of the 20th century’s most iconic literary characters.

      **Val Kilmer**

The late Val Kilmer exuded a natural charm, making him a standout Bruce Wayne: He convincingly portrayed a man who breezes through everyday interactions to focus on more pressing matters at night.

Kilmer also suited the role of Batman well—we prefer a Batman that isn't overly muscular, allowing his skills and gadgets to take precedence.

In Batman Forever, Kilmer’s character is overshadowed by Jim Carrey's over-the-top Riddler, limiting Kilmer's opportunities to shine. Nonetheless, we have a strong appreciation for Val Kilmer and wish he had had more chances to portray Batman.

      **Adam West**

For many years, Adam West was the quintessential Batman—an utterly charming one. In the 1960s film and television series, and in subsequent syndications, he brought to life a Batman who was kind-hearted and relied on his wits and humor rather than fear to combat crime.

West and his youthful partner Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) played it straight, allowing a vibrant roster of guest stars to take center stage.

The entire production worked: The writing featured clever twists, the action scenes were more thrilling than any on television at the time, and the self-aware silliness (BAM! SOCK! POW!) encouraged serious viewers to relax and enjoy.

Adam West played a pivotal role in tying it all together. He was a generous lead who never became too showy and wore his quirky costume with style. We cherish him and the Batman series.

      **Robert Pattinson**

Robert Pattinson delivers one of the most brooding interpretations among Batman actors. There exists a constant struggle between embracing the Batman identity or the Bruce Wayne persona, and Pattinson’s character is truly uncertain. He appears lost and adrift, a portrayal that feels authentic.

Matt Reeves’ 2022 The Batman emphasizes Batman's detective side, showcasing him primarily as a crime solver who relies on his gadgets only to undertake the grim task of fighting villains.

Pattinson might one day emerge as the best Batman actor of all. It will be interesting to see how future Batman films unfold.

      **Michael Keaton**

It's hard to fathom now, but the announcement that Michael Keaton would take on the role of the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman was met with widespread skepticism: He wasn't physically imposing and was primarily known for comedic roles like Mr. Mom.

Yet, Keaton excelled as Bruce Wayne: calculating, quirky, and tortured. Unlike other actors who portray Batman as the true self and Bruce Wayne as the mask, Keaton prioritized Bruce Wayne, with Batman serving as a means to an end.

Keaton arguably delivered an even stronger performance in Batman Returns, Burton’s 1992 sequel, and it was thrilling to see him reprise the role in The Flash, embodying a seasoned, older version of the character. He remains the most relatable of all Batman actors.

      **Christian Bale**
