I Am Frankelda Trailer: Mexico's Premiere Stop-Motion Film Arrives on Netflix This June

Following significant attention on the festival circuit last year, Mexico's first-ever stop-motion feature film is set to be released soon. Directed by Arturo Ambriz and Roy Ambriz, both of whom collaborated with Guillermo del Toro, the fantasy story I Am Frankelda will debut on Netflix starting June 12. In anticipation of the release, a new trailer and poster have been unveiled.

Here's the synopsis: “Set in 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a talented writer whose dark stories are overlooked and dismissed. Forced to silence her voice, she is determined to persevere despite efforts to stifle her. However, when she is plunged into her subconscious, the very monsters she imagined come to life. With the help of Herneval, a tortured prince caught between dreams and nightmares, she must restore balance between fiction and reality before both worlds implode. Meanwhile, the malevolent writer Procustes and his accomplices scheme to take control. As Frankelda and Herneval grow closer, their connection becomes both a source of strength and a burden. To alter their destiny, she must face a love that defies reality and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces engulf her creativity and unveil horrors beyond her imagination.”

Jared Mobarak remarked in his review, “More than the similarly mythologized Monsters, Inc., the first stop-motion feature from Mexico (produced by the Cinema Fantasma studio) evokes a nostalgic favorite from the ’80s: Little Monsters. Much like that Fred Savage film, the writers-directors Los Hermanos Ambriz (Arturo and Roy) have devised a way to connect reality with nightmare, allowing a person to embrace the mischief, mystery, and terror of the latter, which the former rejects. The 19th-century-set I Am Frankelda emerges from a young woman's imagination (Mireya Mendoza’s Francisca Imelda), representing her aspiration to become a horror author—a dream that encounters significant resistance from publishers, society, and her family.”
