I Am Frankelda Trailer: Mexico’s First Stop-Motion Film Arrives on Netflix This June
After generating significant buzz on the festival circuit last year, Mexico's first-ever stop-motion feature film is set to be released soon. Directed by Arturo Ambriz and Roy Ambriz, who have previously collaborated with Guillermo del Toro, the fantasy story I Am Frankelda will debut on Netflix starting June 12. A new trailer and poster have been unveiled ahead of the release.
Here’s the synopsis: “In 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a talented writer whose dark stories are overlooked and dismissed. Compelled to silence her voice, she persists in her fight, despite many attempts to stifle her. However, when she is plunged into her subconscious, the very monsters she conjured come to life. With the guidance of Herneval, a tormented prince caught between dreams and nightmares, she must restore harmony between fiction and reality before both worlds crumble. Meanwhile, the malevolent writer Procustes and his allies conspire to take control. As Frankelda and Herneval grow closer, their relationship becomes both a source of strength and a burden. To alter their destiny, she must confront a love that challenges existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces consume her creativity and unleash horrors beyond her imagination.”
In his review, Jared Mobarak stated, “Beyond the similarly mythologized Monsters, Inc., the first stop-motion feature produced in Mexico (from the Cinema Fantasma studio) brings to mind a nostalgic childhood favorite from the ’80s: Little Monsters. Much like that Fred Savage film, the writers-directors Los Hermanos Ambriz (Arturo and Roy) have crafted a way to bridge reality and nightmare so that a person may embrace the latter's mischief, mystery, and terror that the former rejects. Set in the 19th century, I Am Frankelda emerges from the imagination of a young woman (Mireya Mendoza's Francisca Imelda), as a reflection of her ambition to become a horror writer—a dream met with substantial resistance from publishers, society, and her family.”
