Moriarty, Sherlock's greatest adversary, is set to have his own mystery crime series.
Professor James Moriarty, recognized as one of the most notorious villains in literature and the primary adversary of Sherlock Holmes, will take center stage in his own crime drama series titled Moriarty, set in contemporary times.
This series is brought to life by Chris Cornwall (A Discovery of Witches) and Oliver Lansley (Where’s Wanda?), presenting a "modern reinterpretation of the crime procedural, centered around the most renowned antagonist in detective fiction." In this version, Moriarty is a Professor of Criminal Psychology at Durham University, who secretly orchestrates a network of sophisticated crimes throughout Northern England. When a competing criminal begins to threaten his underground empire, Moriarty must make a pivotal choice: to assist the police as a consultant, wielding the law as a tool to dismantle his rival while concealing his true identity from law enforcement. Alongside Detective Imogen Burrows, a resolute Yorkshire investigator, they will form a formidable partnership, but Moriarty will soon discover that the genuine danger lies not with the opposing criminal group he is targeting.
Professor Moriarty, although only physically present in 'The Final Problem,' is among the most fascinating and iconic figures in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series. This narrative marked the last encounter between the famous detective and the so-called ‘Napoleon of Crime’. Moriarty mirrored Sherlock in his high intelligence and deductive abilities but lacked any of Sherlock’s ethics or sense of justice, managing an extensive network of criminal operations.
In their initial and final confrontation, Moriarty and Sherlock plunged into the Reichenbach Falls, presumed dead, until Doyle revived Sherlock a few years later. Moriarty's legacy continued to be referenced in subsequent stories, yet, unlike Sherlock, he met his demise in 'The Final Problem.'
This initial portrayal left a profound impression, making Moriarty a recurring figure in numerous adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. Recent interpretations have featured Andrew Scott in the BBC’s Sherlock, Jared Harris in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Ralph Fiennes in the parody Holmes & Watson, and Dónal Finn in Guy Ritchie’s Amazon series Young Sherlock, which presents Moriarty and Sherlock as school friends at Oxford University. Other modern renditions have altered the character's gender, with Natalie Dormer playing Jamie Moriarty in Elementary and Sharon Duncan-Brewster in Enola Holmes 2.
Moriarty is merely one of several Sherlock Holmes projects currently in development or production. Young Sherlock has been confirmed for a second season, while Enola Holmes 3 is set to premiere on Netflix this summer (watch the trailer here). Last year also marked the debut of Sherlock & Daughter on The CW, which has been renewed for a second season, and filming is ongoing for The Death of Sherlock Holmes, expected to premiere next year.
