In the summer of 1949, amidst the peak of the Cold War, the father and daughter set out on an emotionally charged and difficult road trip in a black Buick through a devastated Germany—from the US-controlled Frankfurt to the Soviet-occupied Weimar. After a sixteen-year exile in the US, Thomas Mann must confront not only a divided homeland but also significant rifts within his own family.
