Anna Kendrick will be directing The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Anna Kendrick, known for her roles in Pitch Perfect and A Simple Favor, is stepping back into the director's role to adapt Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for Netflix. According to Deadline, Kendrick will helm the project with a script written by Liz Tigelaar and Francesca Sloane. The story follows a young journalist's long-awaited interview with Evelyn Hugo, an older Hollywood starlet. During the interview, Evelyn reveals the details of her seven marriages and shares stories filled with Hollywood scandals, betrayals, and personal challenges, exposing shocking truths about her own life and the lives of those around her.
This will mark Kendrick's second directorial effort, following her 2023 thriller Woman of the Hour, which Netflix secured after its premiere at TIFF that year. The production of Evelyn Hugo will be overseen by Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions, Brad Mendelsohn from Circle Management + Productions, and David Hinojosa, with Jenkins Reid serving as an executive producer.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has emerged as a bestseller among Reid’s works, and Netflix acquired the rights in 2022. The streaming service has been attempting to develop the project since then, previously bringing on Leslye Headland and Maggie Betts to direct at different times, though those efforts did not materialize. With Kendrick now attached to direct, it remains to be seen if the development will advance successfully this time.
