Zack Snyder is set to remake Escape from New York.
Snake Plissken is poised to make a comeback on the big screen as The Hollywood Reporter reveals that director Zack Snyder will take charge of a remake of the 1980s action classic *Escape from New York* for a theatrical release.
Originally released in 1981 by John Carpenter, *Escape from New York* featured Kurt Russell as Snake, set in the dystopian year of 1997 when Manhattan had turned into an open-air prison. When the President of the United States crash-lands in the crumbling city with crucial information that could alter the course of the world, the former military hero-turned-outlaw, Snake Plissken, is forced to rescue him while facing gangs, the military, and former allies to survive.
*Escape from New York* was a box office success and has gained a cult following among 1980s action films. Carpenter later directed a sequel, *Escape from L.A.*, with Russell reprising his famous role as Snake. Over the years, studios have tried to produce another *Escape* film or reboot the franchise, but many of these projects have been stuck in development limbo or have fallen apart. Snyder's involvement marks the first significant news regarding a new *Escape* film in quite some time.
According to THR, Snyder’s reimagined version will be “a more down and dirty movie” in contrast to some of his recent projects, such as his ambitious sci-fi series *Rebel Moon*. The remake will be produced by StudioCanal, with Zack and Deborah Snyder’s Stone Quarry collaborating alongside The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman.
Snyder is best known for his feature debut *Dawn of the Dead*, *300*, and his controversial DC films, which concluded with the release of the Snyder Cut of *Justice League*. Since then, he had grand plans to expand *Army of the Dead* and *Rebel Moon* into extensive sagas, complete with interconnected media for Netflix; however, the disappointing reception of those films led Netflix to cancel all expansion plans.
