Exclusive Trailer for Rhythm Is a Dancer Features Lauren Caster Uncovering a Family Secret
After its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival last fall, Lauren Caster's debut feature, Rhythm Is a Dancer, is set to hit theaters starting July 10, released by the Utopia imprint Circle Collective. Caster directed, wrote, produced, and stars in this drama, which is inspired by her own experiences as the daughter of a lesbian mother and a sperm donor father. In advance of the release, we are excited to present an exclusive debut of the trailer and poster.
Lauren Caster, together with co-star Tate Donovan, will be attending select screenings in person, including on July 8 at LA's Laemmle Royal, July 9 at LA’s Laemmle Monica Film Center, and July 16 and 17 at NYC's Roxy Cinema.
Here's the synopsis: “Ro (played by filmmaker Lauren Caster), a young woman whose dance career is dwindling, returns home after many years to meet her biological father (Tate Donovan, Damages, The OC) for the first time. Born to Susan (Amy Aquino, Working Girl, Moonstruck), a lesbian who chose insemination, Ro struggles with the complexities of her non-traditional family dynamics and soon develops a connection at her new job with three vibrant 80-year-olds, who assist her in reconnecting with her family, her heritage, and herself.”
“Rhythm Is a Dancer stems from a personal chapter in my life—discovering my biological father in my late 20s, an anonymous sperm donor used by my butch lesbian mother,” Lauren Caster shared. “It was a moment that disrupted everything I thought I understood about myself. I had spent years contemplating what his absence meant and how it shaped my identity, and finding him didn’t fill that void; it made it more complicated and confusing. This film reflects that complexity—an exploration of identity and connection at a time when I believed I should have had all the answers.”
