The Piano Trailer: Jane Campion's Palme d'Or Winner Is Back in Theaters with a 4K Restoration

      After making her return to feature filmmaking five years ago with The Power of the Dog, fans have been eager to find out when Jane Campion would grace the big screen again. Although it’s not a new work, a new 4K restoration of her Palme d’Or-winning film The Piano will debut this summer, featuring performances by Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin. Announced at CinemaCon, the film is set to hit theaters on July 24, and Sony Pictures Classics has released a new trailer and poster.

      Here’s the plot summary: “Ada, who has been mute since birth, along with her nine-year-old daughter and her piano, arrives at an arranged marriage in the isolated bush of 19th-century New Zealand. Amongst her possessions, her husband refuses to transport the piano, which remains on the beach. Unable to accept its impending destruction, Ada makes a deal with a neighbor who is illiterate and tattooed. She can reclaim her piano if she permits him to do specific things while she plays; one black key for each lesson. This arrangement entangles all three in a complex emotional and sexual relationship, marked by naive passion and a disturbing disregard for boundaries.”

      Recently screened at American Cinematheque, they highlighted that “the new 4K UHD restoration was overseen and approved by Jane Campion and her director of photography, Stuart Dryburgh. This new restoration, completed in the United States in Dolby Vision HDR 16-bit 4K, was derived from the original 35mm negative scanned at the Fixafilm lab in Australia. Color grading was also supervised and approved by Jane Campion and Stuart Dryburgh, referencing a 35mm print from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Additionally, the original 5.1 audio mix was remastered from the original 24-track digital sound.”
