The Piano Trailer: Jane Campion’s Palme d’Or Winning Film Makes Its Comeback in Theatres with a 4K Restoration

      After returning to feature filmmaking with The Power of the Dog five years ago, fans have been eager to see when Jane Campion would grace the big screen again. Although it's not a new project, this summer will witness the release of a new 4K restoration of her Palme d’Or-winning film, The Piano, which stars Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin. Announced at CinemaCon, the film is set to hit theaters on July 24, and Sony Pictures Classics has just released a new trailer and poster.

      The synopsis reads: “Ada—who has been mute since birth—arrives for an arranged marriage in the remote bush of 19th century New Zealand, alongside her nine-year-old daughter and her piano. Her husband refuses to transport the piano, leaving it behind on the beach. Unable to face its inevitable destruction, Ada forges a deal with an illiterate tattooed neighbor. She may reclaim her piano if she allows him to do specific things while she plays; one black key for each lesson. This arrangement pulls all three deeper into a complex emotional and sexual bond marked by naive passion and a troubling disregard for boundaries.”

      Recently showcased at American Cinematheque, they highlight that “the new 4K UHD restoration was supervised and approved by Jane Campion and her director of photography, Stuart Dryburgh. This restoration was produced in the United States using Dolby Vision HDR 16-bit 4K from the original 35mm image negative, scanned on Arriscan at the Fixafilm lab in Australia. Color grading was overseen and approved by Jane Campion and Stuart Dryburgh, using a 35mm print from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a benchmark. The original 5.1 audio mix has been remastered from the original 24-track digital.”
