Ridley Scott and Hugh Jackman embark on a journey to Treasure Island.
Director Ridley Scott and Hugh Jackman, known for his role as Wolverine, have been announced to create a new adaptation of the adventure classic Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, based on a script by Jack Thorne (Adolescence).
As reported by Deadline, Scott's version of Treasure Island will feature Jackman as the nefarious Long John Silver, who, while posing as the ship's cook, plots to seize the treasure sought by young Jim Hawkins and the crew for his own benefit. It is said that Scott presented the film to 20th Century Studios as part of their overall agreement, but the studio declined due to Disney's earlier adaptations and its reluctance to produce a competing pirate film while attempting to revive the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for a sixth film. The team is now approaching other studios, leading to what is anticipated to be an expensive bidding war. Scott and Michael Pruss will produce under Scott Free Productions, with Thorne set to executive produce.
Published in 1883, Treasure Island tells the story of Jim Hawkins, who discovers a map to the fabled lost treasure of the feared pirate Captain Flint. An expedition to the treasure's island is organized, with Long John Silver masquerading as the ship's cook and scheming a mutiny among his loyal pirates. Throughout the journey, Hawkins develops a strong bond with Silver and faces a dilemma between his loyalty to Silver and the integrity of Captain Smollett, the ship's honorable leader.
Numerous adaptations of Treasure Island have been produced for stage, film, and television. Notable versions include the parody Muppet Treasure Island, featuring Tim Curry in a memorable role as Silver, and Disney's live-action 1950 film starring Robert Newton, along with the 2002 animated sci-fi reimagining Treasure Planet.
In upcoming projects, Jackman will appear in the gritty The Death of Robin Hood, while Scott's next film, The Dog Stars, featuring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce, is scheduled for release on August 28th [check out the latest trailer here].
