Marcello Mastroianni Longs in Trailer for 4K Restoration of Luchino Visconti’s White Nights
Although it is considered one of the exceptional films of its era, showcasing the brilliance of the Italian studio system and representing a high point for director Luchino Visconti and actor Marcello Mastroianni, White Nights has never achieved the esteemed recognition it truly merits. With Visconti’s interpretation of Dostoevsky’s short story of the same name (which would later be beautifully adapted in Robert Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer and James Gray’s Two Lovers) undergoing a 4K restoration by Cinecittà and set for a U.S. release via Janus Films (ahead of the anticipated Criterion edition), this might soon change. With a premiere scheduled for July 24 at Film Forum, a new trailer has been released.
Here is Janus’ description: “Marcello Mastroianni plays a lonely man who has moved to the city, while Maria Schell portrays a sheltered girl troubled by the promises of a lover. They encounter each other by chance on a canal bridge, initiating a hesitant romance that swiftly entangles them in a complex web of yearning and self-deception. Luchino Visconti’s White Nights, a stunning adaptation of Dostoevsky’s novella, transforms this poignant and heart-wrenching story of two restless spirits into a breathtaking black-and-white reverie.”
