Alexandria Stapleton on Directing Sean Combs: The Reckoning
Director Alexandria Stapleton managed to gather an impressive number of individuals to share their stories on film for her docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning. This included jurors from Combs’ criminal case, the co-founder of Bad Boy Records, Combs' security guard, his former global brand director, and women who talked about serious sexual assault allegations.
Stapleton believes that part of the reason so many spoke up was due to the involvement of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as an executive producer. They felt his influence and power would safeguard them and amplify their narratives.
“I think that was really crucial for people to come forward, to feel secure, and to believe their stories would actually be heard,” Stapleton explains.
Additionally, her own reputation as a documentarian known for empathy and fairness played a significant role in encouraging individuals to speak on record.
“One thing I know for certain is that your name is all you have,” says Stapleton, whose previous documentaries include 2011’s Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, the 2023 film Reggie about Reggie Jackson, and the recently premiered The Brittney Griner Story at Sundance.
“As documentarians, our names and reputations matter greatly. When earning the trust of people to sit down for this film, they often looked at my past works to assess, ‘What has she done? What kind of content does she produce?’”
Alexandria Stapleton Discusses Her Committedly Fair Approach to Diddy
Coverage of Diddy can often be chaotic, laden with insinuations and jokes about his apparent fondness for baby oil. However, the four-part docuseries The Reckoning distinguishes itself with its serious, nuanced, and comprehensive treatment of the subject.
The docuseries presents criticisms of Diddy, previously known as Puff Daddy and P Diddy, but also includes counterarguments, sometimes voiced directly by Combs himself. In the fourth episode, two jurors explain why they found some arguments presented earlier in the doc by former Diddy collaborators unconvincing.
The Netflix docuseries is more akin to PBS’s Frontline than to the humor 50 Cent has directed at Diddy on Instagram. If anyone ever attempted to influence Stapleton's impartial approach in the doc—or any of her documentaries—she is unequivocal about her response:
“I would walk.”
She emphasizes that everyone involved, including Jackson, shared her authentic curiosity about Combs’ life and her dedication to journalistic integrity, focusing on the essential questions of who, what, when, where, how, and why.
The docuseries ensures that viewers are reminded in every episode of the findings from Combs’ 2025 trial: he was convicted of two counts of transportation for prostitution but acquitted of more serious charges, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. As of now, he is appealing a 50-month prison sentence and denies all allegations.
Combs did not participate in the docuseries, but it includes a significant amount of footage from the days leading up to his September 2024 arrest, recorded by a videographer whom Combs had permitted to follow him.
When asked what she would inquire of Combs if given the chance to interview him, Stapleton avoids sensational or humiliating questions, aiming instead to genuinely understand him. The area she is most keen to explore, she states, is how he transformed into the person he is today.
“As a filmmaker, I’m very interested in origins,” Stapleton notes. “I would want to ask, ‘Can you tell me about your upbringing and childhood?’ I’m eager to learn about who Sean was before fame arrived, which might have influenced some of his unchecked behavior or potential cries for help.”
She would also like to hear his responses to those who participated in her film: “How do you address them?”
