Dreams in Nightmares Trailer: Shatara Michelle Ford's Highly Regarded Second Film is Set to Release in August.

      Following her remarkable directorial debut, Test Pattern, which received nominations for both the Gotham and Independent Spirit Awards, Shatara Michelle Ford returned to the film festival circuit in 2024 with her latest work, Dreams in Nightmares. The film has now been secured by Lunette Films for its release in New York City on August 21 and in Los Angeles on August 28, accompanied by a new trailer for the drama.

      Featuring Denée Benton, Sasha Compère, Charlie Barnett, Mars Storm Rucker, Dezi Bing, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, the film's brief synopsis reads: “A fresh perspective on the American road movie, Dreams in Nightmares follows a group of queer friends in their mid-30s as they navigate love, identity, and belonging.”

      “I am a filmmaker because I thrive in creative settings where collaboration with intelligent, daring, and highly skilled individuals is vital to every element of a project,” Ford explained to Variety upon the film's acquisition by Lunette. “Particularly in this challenging time for our industry, I wouldn't expect anything less from a distribution strategy. It's uncommon these days for independent filmmakers to establish this type of relationship with a distributor, and I truly value the opportunity to do this with Malkah.”

      In her review, Jourdain Searles noted, “Shatara Michelle Ford’s sophomore feature, Dreams in Nightmares, is a Black road trip film brimming with warmth, healing, and beauty. With her debut film, Test Pattern, Ford emerged as an essential voice in Black cinema, focused on the lives and struggles of Black women. In this film, Ford addresses similar themes with a broader lens that encompasses Black femmes, queer love, and non-monogamous relationship dynamics. An even blend of comedy and drama, Dreams in Nightmares feels both relaxed and cathartic.”
