Apple TV Review – Sugar Season 2
Chris Connor reviews the second season of Apple TV’s Sugar…
Apple TV’s Sugar emerged as a sleeper hit in 2024, featuring Colin Farrell as private investigator John Sugar, who solves crimes in sunny Los Angeles. The character is infatuated with classic noir films, with the series occasionally paying tribute to the genre's legends. What truly sets the show apart, distinguishing it from typical knock-offs like Maltese Falcon or Big Sleep, is the twist that Sugar and other characters are actually aliens. While this may seem like an absurd twist on paper, it’s executed effectively. Now, the show returns with even more missing individuals for our extraterrestrial detective to locate.
With the secret now out, the series feels more relaxed and confident in its identity. It remains stylish, showcasing elegant cars and outfits, with Farrell perfectly embodying the charming private eye hiding secrets behind his striking blue eyes. The show continues to affectionately reference the films that influenced the genre, contrasting the golden age of noir in the 40s and 50s with present-day Los Angeles, where Sugar operates.
Farrell is once again the standout performer, commanding attention on screen alongside Shea Whigham and Sasha Calle. The central mystery feels engaging rather than repetitive, providing Sugar with another intriguing case and dangerous enemies to confront. The soundtrack features numerous 50s classics from artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Nat King Cole, adding sophistication and flair.
Sugar remains one of the most distinctive offerings on Apple TV, blending sci-fi drama with a heartfelt homage to noir classics. Its unpredictable elements, strong performances, and stylistic choices make it a series deserving of a larger audience. With this compelling follow-up season, it is hoped to attract more viewers. Understanding the genre mashup allows for greater appreciation of the show’s unique approach, which offers fresh takes on established tropes, anchored by Farrell’s outstanding performance.
