Jim Carrey and Ron Howard are collaborating on a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
After more than 25 years since its debut, Jim Carrey and Ron Howard are preparing to revisit Whoville in a sequel to their festive success, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, inspired by the classic Dr. Seuss tale.
Released in 2000, How The Grinch Stole Christmas was an adaptation and elaboration on Dr. Seuss' 1957 book, exploring the Grinch’s backstory and his intense dislike for Christmas. The film featured Carrey, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, and Molly Shannon, with Anthony Hopkins serving as the narrator. Howard directed and produced the film alongside his longtime partner, Brian Grazer.
Carrey is currently in discussions to reprise his iconic character, a role he initially despised due to the lengthy and uncomfortable makeup process required to transform into the Grinch. He managed to endure this with the assistance of a specialist who trained CIA operatives to withstand torture. Ultimately, this effort proved worthwhile as The Grinch is widely acclaimed for its makeup and costume design, evidenced by the film's Oscar win for Best Make-Up awarded to artists Rick Baker and Gail Rowell-Ryan.
The script for the sequel will be penned by Alec Berg (Barry), Jeff Schaffer (Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness), and David Mandel (Veep).
The Grinch is arguably Dr. Seuss’ most iconic and cherished character. The book was first transformed into the 1966 animated holiday special, Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, which has become a holiday classic. It was also adapted into the animated film The Grinch by Illumination and Universal in 2018, with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the title character.
Recently, Carrey starred in the live-action series Sonic The Hedgehog as Dr. Robotnik, a role he will reprise in Sonic The Hedgehog 4 next year. Howard's upcoming project is the war drama Alone at Dawn, featuring Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway.
