New Trailer for The Devils Showcases Ken Russell’s Restored 1971 Classic

This year's Cannes Classics selection had significant highlights, but one particular film stood out, making a strong debut for Warner's new Clockwork label. Featuring a 4K restoration and showcasing Ken Russell's previously hidden version, The Devils is set to arrive in the US on October 16. As the 1971 film prepares for its 2026 re-release (marketed as Lee Cronin-esque Ken Russell’s The Devils), a brief teaser has been unveiled.

Here’s the official summary from Clockwork: “An enduring cinematic masterpiece with Academy Award®-winner Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed, KEN RUSSELL’S THE DEVILS is a prophetic saga of obsession and corruption — a landmark creation from influential director Ken Russell. Crafted from the original camera negative, this new 4K restoration showcases Ken Russell’s ultimate vision of THE DEVILS, referencing the edit he privately put together in 2004. KEN RUSSELL’S THE DEVILS offers the uncut, unfiltered theatrical experience that Russell always intended – marking the first time the film is presented restored and in 4K.”

Additionally, here’s information regarding the restoration: “This new 4K restoration of Ken Russell's film was developed from the original camera negative. The sound has been remastered from the original English Composite 35mm Mag Film, transferred at 96kHz, along with other original film elements as needed. The restoration of Picture and Sound was completed by Warner Bros. Post Production Creative Services, Water Tower Color, and Warner Bros. Sound. This reconstruction of the director’s cut of THE DEVILS was carried out by Lucida Productions, London: Paul Joyce, Supervising Producer; Michael Bradsell, Film Editor; Brian King, Online Editor; with special thanks to Mark Kermode.”

The Cannes Classics selection this year was quite significant, but one film stood out above the rest (also marking a strong debut for Warner's new Clockwork label). Receiving a 4K restoration and presented in Ken Russell's previously hard-to-find cut, The Devils is set to make its U.S. debut on October 16. This release comes ahead of the film's return home in 2026 (which appears to be promoted).
