DC Studios reveals animated series for Absolute Batman, Joker, and Krypto.

Batman enthusiasts have much to look forward to as DC Studios announced three new animated series at Annecy. The studio will be adapting Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's Batman Absolute comic along with Joker: Laugh Riot, while Superman's side of the universe will feature Krypto in his own currently untitled series.

DC introduced the Absolute Universe in 2024, which explores various interpretations of their iconic heroes and villains. Snyder and Dragotta's Absolute Batman has consistently ranked among DC’s top-selling titles. The narrative portrays Bruce Wayne not as a billionaire but as a blue-collar worker who assembles his own gear to become Batman, combating crime and corruption in Gotham City. Snyder will serve as the showrunner and executive producer for Absolute Batman, with Dragotta as a producer.

Moreover, the Clown Prince of Crime will headline his own anime series, Joker: Laugh Riot. In this series, The Joker is devastated after Batman is killed by someone other than him and embarks on a quest to find Batman’s murderer. The official synopsis states:

When Batman is slain, the Joker embarks on a merciless pursuit through Gotham’s underworld to locate the killer who has taken his greatest rival. However, as his violent search for answers pushes him closer to becoming a vigilante than a villain, Joker must face the reality that without Batman, he has lost his sense of identity.

Joker: Laugh Riot will be directed by Yasuhuro Aoki (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim), with DC's Jim Krieg serving as executive producer.

Lastly, a children's animated series focusing on Krypto, the loyal canine companion of Superman and Supergirl, is also in the works. Krypto gained attention in last year’s Superman and is back in the newly released Supergirl. The untitled series, produced by C.H. Greenblatt, will depict Krypto’s escapades with a group of mischievous neighborhood friends when he’s not busy saving the day with Superman and Supergirl. The synopsis reveals:

When he’s not spending time with Superman and Supergirl, Krypto teams up with a group of misguided criminal hopefuls who live nearby, and they quickly find out he’s a bundle of chaotic, lovable energy, even worse than any of them! As he joins them in their antics and poorly planned schemes, Krypto’s inherently good nature gradually redeems them, whether they appreciate it or not.

There is currently no information on the premiere dates for any of the series or how Snyder’s involvement with the Absolute Batman project might affect the comic. In the meantime, next month will see the return of Batman: Caped Crusader for its second season (watch the trailer here), and the first part of the highly-anticipated Batman: Knightfall trilogy will be released this summer (watch the trailer here).
