Supergirl opens to a disappointing million at the global box office over its opening weekend.

It has been a disappointing weekend for Warner Bros. and DC Studios, as the recently rebooted DC Universe's second cinematic release, Supergirl, has not resonated with audiences, earning only $68 million globally during the Friday-to-Sunday timeframe.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and featuring Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon in the lead role of Kara Zor-El, along with Jason Momoa from the DCEU as the beloved intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, this superhero film had a budget of $170 million. It brought in just $38 million in North America, placing it in second behind the reigning champion Toy Story 5, which earned $73 million. Comparatively, this result aligns with the domestic opening of Todd Phillips’ R-rated film Joker: Folie à Deux, which earned $37.7 million, and is significantly less than James Gunn’s DC Universe relaunching Superman, which debuted with $125 million domestically last summer.

An additional $30 million was gathered from international markets—including $4.1 million from the UK, $3.4 million from Mexico, and $2 million from Australia—resulting in Supergirl’s total global earnings of $68 million, which falls short of Sony’s notorious Marvel box office failure Morbius. The Jared Leto-led vampire movie opened to $39 million domestically and $83.9 million worldwide, ultimately concluding its run with just $167.5 million. With Supergirl's underwhelming start, it will struggle to surpass this figure, let alone meet the estimated $300 million needed to break even when marketing costs are included.

After a promising $618 million debut with Superman, James Gunn and Peter Safran's nascent DC Universe has now experienced its first setback. The pressure is mounting for DC Studios’ upcoming two releases—October's $40 million-budgeted body horror Clayface and Gunn's Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow—especially with Warner Bros. facing an impending acquisition by Paramount Skydance.
