The 2026 Venice Classics lineup includes newly restored films by John Cassavetes, Roman Polanski, Shinji Sōmai, and others.
Although there are still more than two weeks remaining until the Venice Film Festival reveals its official lineup on July 23, they have already announced their selection of new restorations featured in Venice Classics. Starting with Tinto Brass' Col cuore in gola (Deadly Sweet), the lineup includes John Cassavetes’ Minnie and Moskowitz, Roman Polanski’s Cul-de-sac, Shinji Sōmai’s The Catch, Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be, Jaromil Jireš’ Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy, Andrzej Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds, among others.
The festival's Artistic Director, Alberto Barbera, remarked, “Nostalgia is not the main motivation for a section like Venice Classics. While one goal is to recall the vigor of a time when ‘cinema was everything’ (to quote Leonardo Sciascia), another aspect to consider is the understanding that the films of the past are essential for nourishing the cinema of tomorrow. A rich tapestry made up of great and unforgettable masterpieces awaits re-examination, as well as films that have been somewhat overlooked and deserve careful reconsideration.”
